Past Events- Lessons in Leadership with Marty Meehan
On October 3, 2018 Leaders in Lowell was honored to have the opportunity to host the President of the University of Massachusetts, Marty Meehan. We invited him to speak because we saw his personal commitment to public service from his tireless work for the Lowell community through his work in government and his tenure at UMass.
President Meehan spoke about the power of education and the importance of college affordability and how different factors affect the cost and experience of an education. He also addressed how his previous career in government has helped him with various aspects of his current job leading the University of Massachusetts.
He also spoke on his own journey to his current position of leadership. Also speaking at the event were President Emeritus Jack Wilson and Senior Vice Chancellor Yestramski. This was a very important message for our audience to hear as the rising cost of education is a pressing topic for a significant portion of Americans. This is also a topic where new, innovative, and dedicated leaders are in high demand to enact change.

About President Meehan Speaker:
Martin T. Meehan is the 27th president of the University of Massachusetts and the first undergraduate alumnus to lead the UMass system. He was elected president after eight successful years as chancellor of UMass Lowell, where he led the campus on its rise to top-tier national university status, improving its performance in every sphere of activity.
A former member of Congress, President Meehan represented the 5th Congressional District of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2007. He also served as Massachusetts’ deputy secretary of state for securities and corporations and was the first assistant district attorney of Middlesex County.
President Meehan, a first-generation college student, graduated cum laude from UMass Lowell in 1978 with a degree in education and political science. He earned a master’s degree in public administration from Suffolk University in 1981 and a juris doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 1986.
Born in Lowell, President Meehan is one of seven children and grew up in a family where the importance of education was always stressed. He has an abiding belief in public higher education’s power to transform lives and feels strongly that the University of Massachusetts is the greatest force for social and economic progress in the Commonwealth.
